Copy editing and proofreading services

My name is David Kessler and I offer a wide range of copy editing and proofreading services for authors of articles, academic papers, reports, books and eBooks.

I won’t try to sell you on the need for copy editing and proofreading. The fact that you are here means that you are interested in these services and know the need for them. As a writer myself, I know that the cardinal rule is: one can never copy edit or proofread one’s own work. Or at least one can: but one does so at one’s peril!

As I said above, the proofreading and copy editing services that I offer are quite wide-ranging, covering everything from ebooks for the Kindle and Smashwords, through print-on-demand books via CreateSpace and Lulu, to books for publishing houses, articles for scholarly journals, blogs, company reports, charity reports, text books, internet content, etc. You may ask what qualifies me to offer such a diverse range of copy editing and proofreading services. The answer is that I have over forty years of experience as a both creative writer and a copywriter.

Services for creative writers

For those of you who have written books or ebooks, I would ask this question: how would you like to have your work proofread (and edited) by an author who has had four books published by Hodder Headline and three by HarperCollins?

Well, that’s me. This means that when I proofread and copy edit your book or ebook, I bring to bear on the task not only the keen eye of a highly educated native English speaker but also the insight and instinct of an experienced wordsmith. When I copy edit your book, I know what you are trying to say and so I can edit your work without tampering with the essence or losing your meaning or intention.

Special Deal for books, eBooks and longer academic works
In the case of long works, such as full length books and ebooks, the procedure is different in two ways.

  1. Firstly, as soon as I receive the full work, I will randomly select a passage of text between 1000 and 2000 words and proofread it free of charge! I will send the proofread copy with the quote and this will give you an indication of the quality of my work.
  2. Depending on the length, I may offer staged payments, so that you pay in instalments as parts of the work are delivered.

Services for copy writers

But what if your work is non-fiction? For example, journalism? I can relate to your vocation too, having written the definitive book about London’s infamous Wimbledon Common murder! But what if you want me to proofread or copy edit, say, a financial report? Well you’ll be interested to know that I have done financial copy writing and editing for Wolfe-Lombard and Sterling International. Or maybe you are submitting advertising material for me to edit or proofread? Well, it’s good news there again because I also worked for advertising giant Ruder Finn! I have also been an in-house copywriter at medical technology company Ultramind Ltd where I did technical writing and editing.

Here to serve YOU!

So as you can see, my experience is indeed wide-ranging, enabling me to relate to and work in harmony with such diverse material as creative writing, journalism, advertising, technical writing, financial writing and internet content. And as you are the writer, you want a copy editor and/or proofreader who can bring a second pair of eyes to your work, backed up by an understanding of what your work is about.

Also, please note, whether copy editing or proofreading, I use the revision mode (or what we “old timers” used to call “redlining”). This means that you will see the corrections marked in colour (not necessarily red) with the additions underlined and the deletions bearing a line running through them. This puts you in the driver’s seat and gives you complete control of the output. You will be free to accept or reject these changes individually or as a whole.

But what if something is unclear with the source material, or I have questions or queries about what you are trying to say? No worries! These questions and queries will be added as comments that can be reviewed, answered and then deleted. And because getting it right sometimes involves going over it again, in most cases (depending on the nature of the work) I will factor a second round of corrections into the quote for the job!

Also please note that while Microsoft Word files are my preferred option for source material, I can work with – and output to – a wide variety of formats, including pdf, html, XML, epub and mobi.

For a quote please send your manuscript or copy to along with the deadline and indicating whether you want the quote in sterling, US dollars or Euro. Or contact us by phone or using the form below.
